Beats by Dre founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine are joining forces with the University of Southern California, which was founded in 1880 – but they’re not doing it as some sort of history lesson. Rather, they’re banking on the future. The noted hip-hop figures are donating $70 million to create the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation. Starting in the fall of 2014, Trojans will be able to enroll in the four-year program, which offers courses in technology, art, design and marketing.

According to a study, your Likes of a brand on Facebook are worth about $174.17 to that brand.

Syncapse, a social intelligence company, conducted a study with more than 2,000 Facebook users who liked a brand and considered a Facebook user’s product spending, loyalty, recommendations, brand affinity and more to come up with the number. It turns out Facebook fans spend more money on the brands they like—$116 a year more than nonfans—even if their income was equal. In addition, those who liked brands were 18% more satisfied with the brand and 11% more likely to continue buying the brand.

Japanese broadcasting company, NHK introduced its cutting-edge technology at NAB 2013 in Las Vegas, the world’s largest exhibition related to broadcasting equipment and technology, NHK presented the latest television technology. SUPER Hi-VISION or (SHV) technology.
SHV (8K Ultra HDTV) is the broadcasting medium of the near future, and NHK is playing a leading role in promoting the development of this technology. SHV offered viewers an extremely vivid viewing experience with its ultra high-definition million pixels, which is 16 times that of
the current Hi-Vision (HDTV), and 22.2 multichannel 3D soundsystem.

Bloomberg Businessweek reports hearing from five sources close to the project that the budget for the new Apple campus has surged from $3 billion when it was first proposed in 2011 to $5 billion now. That works out to be about $1,500 per square foot, according to Businessweek.

On April 3, 1973 — exactly 40 years from today — Motorola employee Marty Cooper made the first mobile phone call.

Marty used a Motorola DynaTAC to call Bell Labs (then a division of AT&T), reportedly saying “I’m ringing you just to see if my call sounds good at your end.”

The device that Marty used to place the call was a prototype which would later become the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x. It was the first commercially available mobile phone, and despite its meager specs for today’s standards — it weighed 2.5 pounds and only had a one-line, text-only LED display — it cost a whopping $3,995.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is accepting applications for  its Grand Challenges Explorations initiative, an agile, accelerated grant program encouraging bold approaches aimed at improving the lives of the world’s poorest people. Anyone – students, scientists, entrepreneurs – with a transformative idea is invited to submit an easy, online, two-page application.

The Gates Foundation and an independent group of reviewers will select the most innovative proposals, and grants will be awarded within approximately four months from the proposal submission deadline. Initial grants are USD$100,000 each. Projects demonstrating potential will have the opportunity to receive additional funding up to $1 million (usd).
