Sotheby’s is honored to announce that Mark Rothko’s Blue Over Red, created in the critical year of 1953, will appear as a highlight of their Contemporary Art Evening Auction in New York. In this episode of Expert Voices, Sotheby’s Chairman Lisa Dennison examines the inspiration behind Rothko’s masterpiece and explores his pioneering approach to abstraction. Executed in a richly saturated palette of orange, red and yellow, dramatically offset by a luminous blue band, Blue Over Red exemplifies the signature radiance of Rothko’s works.

Artist Keith Haring was inspired by the graffiti, pop art and underground club culture of New York. Haring was a great collaborator and worked with like-minded artists such as Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. All were interested in creating art for the many. Haring designed record covers for RUN DMC and David Bowie, directed a music video for Grace Jones and developed a fashion line with Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood. In doing so, he introduced his art and ideas to as many people as possible. Compelled to speak for his generation, his art responds to urgent issues including political dictatorship, racism, homophobia, drug addiction, AIDS awareness, capitalism, and the environment. The quotes in this film come from Keith Haring’s original journals (which he kept between 1971 to 1989) and from ‘Keith Haring: The Authorized Biography’ by John Gruen, 1991.

Unlimited Imagination Books is an independent book publishing start up by artist and author Kim Bell. UI Books has published 7 children’s books in 2019 which are all available on Amazon. Kim Bell created his own self publishing book company due to a struggling economy and the lack of livable wage job opportunities in America. He was fired from a job back in 2018 which may have been the best thing that ever happened, since it created a sense of urgency to find a way to make ends meet. Kim Bell used his imagination and started illustrating “ideations” from his sketch books from the past 7 years. After publishing his first book, “Mr. Chicken In the Kitchen” more ideas came to mind and more books were released. Bell has since created a merchandise line based around the Unlimited Imagination Books brand. All merchandise is available online. Thanks again for your support.
