Art critic Alastair Sooke tracks down the ten most expensive paintings to sell at auction, and investigates the stories behind the astronomic prices art can reach. Basquiat @ Christie’s NYC Auction To Set Records in November
‘Untitled,’ 1981, acrylic and oil stick on canvas, 78 x 68 inches
Christie’s recently announced that Jean-Michel Basquiat’s 1981 work, Untitled, could set an artist’s record in November, when it is expected to sell for about $20 million (usd).
Christie’s did not identify the seller, but it is rumored to be French fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier.
Basquiat died at the age of 27 in 1988 of a drug overdose. According to Christie’s,Jean-Michel Basquiat left 917 drawings, 25 sketchbooks, 85 prints, and 171 paintings.

Hip Hop mogul and co founder of the Roc-A-Fella brand Damon Dash is set to open a new art gallery in lower Manhattan called “Poppington” . The newest neighborhood showroom, specializing in “street style” programming, kicks off September 27 with an inaugural exhibition called “Quality of Life.” “Quality Of Life” will consist of works from a number of street artists including Phil, Jim Joe, and Pixote.
