SAN FRANCISCO — Apple’s new iPad will be thicker and heavier than the iPad 2 because it features a bigger, more powerful battery.
Even with a bigger battery, the battery life of the device stays the same: about 10 hours. That’s because Apple has quadrupled the screen resolution, which in turn requires more computing power.
Apple revealed the device Wednesday at an event in San Francisco. Read More

Amazon today announced a video deal with Viacom, Inc. which will allow Amazon Prime members to instantly stream TV shows from MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, TV Land, Spike, VH1, BET, CMT and Logo. The deal increases the total number of Prime Instant Videos to more than 15,000, the company reports. YouTube now sees 4 billion views per day. That’s a 25 percent increase over the past eight months, the company told Reuters.
The last time YouTube released this data was in May 2011, when the company was celebrating its sixth birthday. At the time, YouTube was seeing 3 billion views per day, an increase of 50% over the past 12 months. That’s the equivalent of every U.S. resident watching at least nine videos per day.
Previously, YouTube hit the 2 billion views per day mark in May 2010, which the company noted was “nearly double the prime-time audience of all three major U.S. television networks combined.” So, it goes to reason that YouTube now has four times the viewership of the prime-time network audience. Wow.
– Every second, one hour of video is uploaded to YouTube.
– 9 month’s worth every two hours.
– A decade of video every day.
– A century’s worth of video every 10 days.

The FBI on Thursday shut down popular file-sharing website Megaupload.com and charged the site’s founders and five others with running “an international organized criminal enterprise” responsible for “massive online piracy.”

Megaupload Limited and sister company Vestor Limited generated “more than $175 million in criminal proceeds” and caused “more than half a billion dollars in harm to copyright owners” through the piracy of “numerous types of copyrighted works,”according to FBI.

Seven people have been charged with online piracy crimes in an indictment, dated Jan. 5 and unsealed in northern Virginia. Four of those suspects are already in custody, authorities said.

Among those charged are site founders Kim Dotcom and Kim Tim Jim Vestor and Chief Marketing Officer Finn Batato.

Megaupload CEO Swizz Beatz, a rapper and producer and husband to pop star Alicia Keys, was not listed among those charged. Read More

Alabama-based rock band One Like Son wanted to challenge themselves when they returned to the “studio” to record their third album after a 10-year music hiatus. So on Jan. 1, 2010, band frontman Stephen Poff vowed to spend the year recording a new set of songs solely with iPhone track apps.

“I feel this is one of our best sounding recordings,” Poff said. In the past, Poff recorded two albums the traditional way – in a studio using condenser microphones, hard disc systems, amps, cables, patchbays and other accessories.

According to Poff, recording tracks using only applications was much more difficult than he anticipated. His previous iPhone-recording experience only involved experimenting on basic four-track applications that allows users to record, then overlay four tracks of music to play together.

The 11-track album was finished right before the new year on Dec. 31, 2011. Read More

TheVerge reports:

Beats audio has become a pretty familiar brand around these parts: in addition to the ubiquitous headphones, the company has licensed its brand to HP and is majority owned by HTC — both of which manufacture an increasing number of Beats-branded products. Regardless, it’s the headphones that built the brand, and the future of who will be manufacturing them is a little more cloudy today as Beats and Monster will not be renewing their contract.
Sources told Business Week that the split happened because of a disagreement over (what else?) money and credit, with each company believing it deserved more of both. Read More
