The Ohio native arrived in New York in the early 90s and his goal was to photograph the key players on the American hip hop scene: “My goal was to photograph all of the up-and-coming rap superstars of the time. No one had ever done it before”, he explains about his artistic approach.
20 years later, Jonathan Mannion has met and photographed artists who are icons of their generation, those who have left a mark on the history of the most important musical trend since Rock & Roll.

“The future of CNN is as much about digital as about television, if not more.”

With those words, CNN President Jeff Zucker kicked off a press event in Manhattan on Wednesday, where the network unveiled its impending digital makeover. It’s a multi-platform effort CNN is planning to spend $15 million on this year.

On the consumer-facing side, CNN will get a new website — a darker, more streamlined version of its current site, which was released in 2009. Gone is the long left-hand column with dozens of linked headlines; the site gives play to a single big story above the fold, both on the homepage and on its section pages, like The Huffington Post‘s front page.

Beats by Dre founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine are joining forces with the University of Southern California, which was founded in 1880 – but they’re not doing it as some sort of history lesson. Rather, they’re banking on the future. The noted hip-hop figures are donating $70 million to create the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation. Starting in the fall of 2014, Trojans will be able to enroll in the four-year program, which offers courses in technology, art, design and marketing.
