“The Revolution will Not be Televised”

Gil Scott-Heron, the poet and recording artist whose syncopated spoken style and mordant critiques of politics, racism and mass media in pieces like “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” made him a notable voice of black protest culture in the 1970s and an important early influence on hip-hop, died on Friday at St. Luke’s Hospital in Manhattan. He was 62 and had been a longtime resident of Harlem. Checkout a few Hip Hop tweets for Gil Scott-Heron below:

Directors Bill Duke and D. Channsin Berry have put together a powerful new documentary titled ‘Dark Girls‘ that takes a look at the “deep-seated biases and attitudes about skin color…particularly dark skinned women, outside of and within the Black American culture.

Billboard projects that Lady Gaga’sBorn This Way” will debut with first-week sales of at least 1.15 million units, far outpacing earlier projections, thanks to explosive sales at Amazon, which priced the album at 99 cents for two days this week.

According to sources, “Born This Way,” scanned 330,000 units at Amazon on Monday, even though the unprecedented traffic derailed the Amazon servers. While the Amazon experience left some consumers in a sour mood, the news on the technical glitch helped heighten awareness about the album (not that Interscope and Lady Gaga needed any help.

As a make-good for customers who experienced difficulty in downloading “Born This Way” on Monday, May 23, the merchant priced the album again at 99 cents on Thursday (May 26). Industry sources told Billboard.biz that the second-day availability of 99-cent prices generated approximately 110,000 scans, nearly all of which were the 99-cent version.

But even without a second day of 99-cent pricing, “Born This Way” was on its way to a million-unit debut week, sources told Billboard. On the first day alone, the album moved at least 500,000 units, with sources saying that first day sales at

iTunes totaled 104,000 units;
Best Buy, 45,000 units;
Target, 35,000 units
&
Starbucks, 10,000 units.

Film Director Spike Lee took on New Orleans and won the attention of America with his post hurricane Katrina HBO documentary, “If God Is Willing and da Creek Don’t Rise”. The film director was one of the 38 people honored Monday at the 70th Annual Peabody Awards at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.

After being awarded a Peabody Award for his documentary on post-Katrina New Orleans, Spike Lee had some words for the former president of the United States George W. Bush, on his handling of the situation:

“Under the direction, of the chief of command, President George Bush, , it took the United States government five days to come to rescue of its American citizens, Five days. And I know he’s written a book and what not, but no one’s ever explained, to this day, why it took five days. In fact, we talk about, in the first one, there was a typhoon in Sri Lanka, and we were there in 2 1/2 days, we were there, and that’s half way around the world, and yet it took five days for the United States to show up in New Orleans, and to this date, it’s never been explained why.” Lee told Huffington Post @ Peabody Award’s Ceremony

“Here’s the thing we have to realize. The levees are all throughout the United States of America, it’s not just New Orleans, it’s not just Louisiana,” Lee said. “And from what I’ve been told from experts, the levee system of the United States of America is in shambles, and unless they get the Army Corps of Engineers together, people are going to be at risk. If you live in any coastal area in the United States America, you’re going to be at risk.”

Spike has a valid point, if you live near water or by the coast you are pretty much F*CKED in the game if the Levee’s break.  Spike pictured w/ CNN’s Larry King below. #GWOPALYPSE NOW
