This film, called Olive, went up on Kickstarter today and was shot entirely using a Nokia N8 phone and a special designed 35mm lens.

Director Hooman Khalili states the difference between Olive and other films that have tried the whole “movie shot on a smartphone” gimmick — like The Wrong Ferrari — is that he intends to show the film in theatres. Khalili even itends to submit it for Oscar consideration — which would be a first for a smartphone-shot film.

Russell Simmons (founder of Def Jam Records)

Hip Hop originated in New York during the 1970s, Russell Simmons (GlobalGrind.com) along with wealthy punk rocker Rick Rubin were the first pioneers of the hip hop music genre to create a record label empire; Def Jam records.  Def Jam introduced the world to legendary artists such as RUN DMC, LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys in the 1980s which led to immediate success, turning Def Jam Records into the biggest record label in Hip Hop during this time period.  In today’s world Russell Simmons is more interested in yoga and occupying Wall Street rather than breaking the next big artist.  Therefore the door has opened for new moguls to takeover the throne and create empires for the 2012 generation.   GWOP Magazine staff has put together a list of the top Hip Hop/Rap Record labels for 2012.  Nas said ‘Hip Hop was dead in 2006’, well these labels are destined to prove that the music genre has only suffered a heart attack and there is no need to panic.  Checkout the full list after the jump.

General Cannabis Inc. has just announced that it’s acquired Marijuana.com. The company didn’t disclose the details of the deal, but we’ve confirmed that the acquisition price was $4.20 million.

Spotted at: TechCrunch

General Cannabis is a serious business: it’s traded on the OTCQX market, and a year ago it acquired WeedMaps, a popular ‘Yelp for Cannabis Dispensaries‘ site with a large following. WeedMaps was topping $400,000 a month in revenues at the time of the acquisition and it’s growing nicely — the site did over $1 million in gross revenues in July, and now sees 10 million page views a month.

The acquisition includes both the valuable Marijuana.com domain name and the existing site/content, which currently consists of a bulletin forum that centers on cannabis discussion and generates 3.5 million page views per month. WeedMaps Media, which is a subsidiary of General Cannabis, will be ‘bridging’ its membership database with the forum’s, allowing WeedMaps users to log into Marijuana.com with their existing accounts. The company says that it will also be expanding the amount of content and functionality available. The domain and site will be transfered early in 2012.

It’s obviously a pricey acquisition, but one that will likely pay dividends. Marijuana.com is much easier to remember than General Cannabis or WeedMaps.com, and the company is positioning itself as the go-to place for information that’s relevant to cannabis users.
