United Health Foundation has released their annual report on America’s Health.

The most startling fact in the report was that in the last decade the annual improvement in America’s health has declined 69% compared to the 1990s.
In a mere two decades, obesity has risen 15+ points (from 11.6% to 27.5%) in the adult population and could approach 40+ percent by the end of the decade if the trend continues.
Both obesity and diabetes (type 2) are preventable and treatable through lifestyle changes. Five factors are key to avoid becoming a statistic: keep your weight within a normal range (with BMI of 25 or less); eat a healthy diet; refrain from (or quit) smoking; alcohol in moderation; and partake in regular physical exercise (determined to be at least 20 minutes of aerobic exercise three or more times per week).

Brent Darby, who led River Rouge high school (Michigan) to Class B basketball titles in 1998 and ’99, died today in a Detroit hospital. He was 30 years young.

Darby had experienced problems from blood clots for more than a year, and they were the cause of his death.

Darby graduated from River Rouge in 1999 and played four seasons at Ohio State before graduating in 2003. He played professionally in Spain and Italy before returning to Michigan. His last season in Italy was 2009.

R.I.P. Brent Darby.  This is horrible news. Our prayers go out to the Darby family. #TheGoodDieYoung

Darby isn’t the 1st Michigan standout basketball player to pass this year.  The city of Detroit lost former NBA player Robert “Tractor” Traylor earlier this year to a heart attack in Puerto Rico.  Traylor was a former McDonald’s All American and University of Michigan star who passed on May 11,2011 while talking to his wife on the phone.

The Twilight movies are more than a cultural sensation, they’re a financial phenomenon. The latest, Breaking Dawn, has ranked No. 1 at the U.S. box office for the past three weekends and has already earned $588 million worldwide. The entire franchise has brought in $2.4 billion so far and there’s still one more movie set for release next year.

It’s been a lot of reward for relatively little outlay. The first two movies were produced for $37 million and $50 million, respectively. The current film is the most expensive to date with an estimated budget of $110 million. Part of the reason the budget has risen is that stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are getting paid more for playing Bella and her vampire boyfriend Edward, but they’re still not getting the $20 million paychecks that some big stars can command.
