(AP)  ATLANTA — Georgia’s board of pardons rejected a last-ditch clemency bid from Troy Davis on Tuesday, one day before his scheduled execution, despite support from figures including an ex-president and a former FBI director for the claim that he was wrongly convicted of killing a police officer in 1989.

Davis is scheduled to die Wednesday at 7 p.m. EDT by injection for killing off-duty Savannah officer Mark MacPhail, who was shot dead while rushing to help a homeless man being attacked. It is the fourth time in four years that Davis’ murder execution has been scheduled by Georgia officials.

A Chatham County judge signed a death warrant for Troy Anthony Davis, who was convicted of killing a Savannah police officer in 1989.

The warrant sets the execution between Sept. 21 and Sept. 28. The state Department of Corrections will set the actual date. Davis has been on death row for 19 years.

Davis’ appeals are exhausted. He is expected to once again ask the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to grant him clemency. The board has previously denied that request.  Davis continues to maintain his innocence, and several witnesses have recanted their testimonies. Some even say that one of the witnesses was, in fact the killer of the off duty police officer.

Supporters of Troy Davis include former US President Jimmy Carter, Reverend Al Sharpton, NAACP founder Ben Jealous, Bernice King (MLK’s daughter) and the staff of GWOP Magazine.  Davis is set to be put to death by lethal injection on Wednseday (September 21, 2011) by the state of Georgia.

Hurricane Katrina of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was the costliest natural disaster, as well as one of the five deadliest hurricanes, in the history of the United States.  Among recorded Atlantic hurricanes, it was the sixth strongest overall. At least 1,836 people died in the actual hurricane and in the floods that followed, making it one of the deadliest U.S. hurricanes of all time.

The most significant number of deaths occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana, which flooded as the levee system  failed, in many cases hours after the storm had moved inland.  Eventually 80% of the city and large tracts of neighboring parishes became flooded, and the floodwaters lingered for weeks. The Bush administration sought out over $105 billion in repairs and reconstruction from the effects of Katrina, making this the most costly Hurricane in US History.

Legendary filmmaker Spike Lee produced a film on the effects from hurricane Katrina entitled, “When the Levees Broke” Watch a few clips below:
