Detroit—The city of Detroit filed the largest municipal bankruptcy case in U.S. history Thursday afternoon, culminating a decades-long slide that transformed the nation’s iconic industrial town into a model of urban decline crippled by population loss, a dwindling tax base and financial problems.

The 16-page petition was filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Detroit.

Detroit is 18.5 billion dollars in debt.

State Department Facebook Spent $630,000 On ‘Likes’ For Social Media Pages.
A striking finding in a recent Inspector General report revealed that the U.S. Department of State spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on Facebook “likes” in the past two years, effectively buying fans.

In order to bolster its presence on Facebook, the State Department paid about $630,000 for campaigns to increase its total number of likes, the May 2013 report indicates.

While the sheer amount of funds the State Department dropped on social media may be surprising in and of itself, the most significant aspect of the report may be the finding that these fans are, for the most part, fake.

The association voted on the measure at its annual meeting in Chicago. The AMA noted that obesity rates in the United States have “doubled among adults in the last twenty years and tripled among children in a single generation” and that the World Health Organization, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Internal Revenue Service already recognize the condition as a disease.

Obesity is associated with a variety of diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers. Rising obesity is expected to increase America’s already high health care costs.

The AMA’s recommendations accompanying the vote included urging physicians and insurance companies to “recognize obesity as a complex disorder,” encouraging national efforts to educate the public “about the health risks of being overweight and obese.”

The AMA also recommended the creation “National Obesity Awareness Month” to highlight the benefits of exercise and to warn of the risks of obesity. Source

Stefano Gabbana (left) Domineco Dolce (right)

ROME (AFP) –  An Italian court Wednesday sentenced fashion house duo Dolce and Gabbana to one year and eight months in prison for tax evasion of around one billion euros ($1.33 billion), according to media reports.

Lawyers for Dolce and Gabbana, whose celebrity clients include Beyonce and Madonna, immediately said they will be appealing, and under Italian law the sentence will be suspended in the meantime.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were accused of having transferred control of their brands to a shell company in Luxembourg in 2004 and 2005 to avoid paying Italian taxes.

Prosecutors had argued that setting up the Luxembourg company Gado — an acronym of the surnames of the two designers — while the company was operating out of Italy was a bid to defraud the state.

Investigators completed a probe into the designers, as well as five other people, in 2010 and the case was dismissed in April 2011 but reopened in November last year and went to trial.

Founded in 1985, Dolce and Gabbana employs more than 3,000 people and has 250 shops in 40 countries around the world.

Three men in Pacific Beach, CA were arrested as part of a marijuana-trafficking ring that extended to multiple states. The bust was part of a yearlong investigation by U.S. Postal Service and the Southwest Border Anti-Money Laundering Unit, and the three bosses were accused of shipping between 10 and 20 pounds of weed to customers everywhere from Texas to Massachusetts. Investigators say the operation netted the men about $20,000 to $30,000 a week.

The trio—28-year-old Matthew Schneider, 25-year-old Kyle Gillen and 24-year-old Chris Gillen—was arrested on Wednesday. Authorities recovered 300 marijuana plants and $500,000 in assets including cars, an SKS rifle and shotgun and $35,000 in cash. All three of them have been charged with selling and transporting marijuana, conspiracy and money laundering.

WordPress is 10 years old today. Here is how wordpress is used around the world.

WordPress, the blogging and content management system, is 10-years old today. The platform has evolved in the past decade from being a basic blogging service to a news and media platform for major brand names and businesses around the world.

Started by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little, WordPress is an open source service where anyone can make modifications to the code to improve their blog and make it something that works for them.

Bloggers who use WordPress are able to apply design themes to their sites while also integrating third-party plugins easily. Since it’s open source software, there isn’t a need for an approval process before someone can implement a new feature.  GWOP Magazine, CNN, TechCrunch, Mashable, Dow Jones, UPS, TED, BOSSIP, RAPRADAR all use a wordpress platform to get the message across for their business.

“Thanks Matt and Mike for creating wordpress.  Without you there would be no GWOP Magazine”

Cortlan Wickliff, 22, is graduating from Harvard Law School on May 30, 2013. When he crosses the stage and receives his Juris Doctorate, Wickliff will be the youngest African-American to ever join the elusive law school alumni club.

Wickliff of Texas was the youngest African-American engineer in the United States when he finished a Bachelor’s of Science in Bioengineering at 19.

The Rice University alum’s research includes developing a heart-and-respiration-rate monitor for babies as well transforming pacemakers to monitor vital signs. Wickliff’s interest in medicine and engineering developed after his father died of a heart attack. He has devoted his energy to creating cost-effective medical advancements that can save lives.

Wickliff, who’s a member of the Root’s Young Futurists list, will pursue a Ph.D. in engineering at Texas A&M University.  Congratulations Cortlan Wickliff.  Keep up the good work.
