Banksy, ‘Game Changer’, 2020. Sold in 2021 for over $23,000,000, setting a new auction record for the artist.

In May of 2020, an unsuspecting children’s hospital in England received this Banksy painting along with the note, “Thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s only black and white”

The work is a celebration of all the first responders helping with the COVID pandemic; the child has discarded his typical superhero figures to play with a uniformed, masked, and caped nurse.

The proceeds from the sale of this artwork went towards supporting the University Hospital Southampton staff and patients, as well as other healthcare organizations.

Bidding started at $100 and ended at $69,346,250. This was the first digital art piece to be auctioned off and third highest payment in history for a work produced by a living artist. Safe to say digital art and NFTs (Non Fungible Tokens) are the future of Art, collecting and investing.

Ken Griffin, founder of the hedge fund Citadel, paid upwards of $100 million for Jean-Michel Basquiat’s 1982 canvas Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump. The work was previously owned by Peter Brant, the media magnate and collector whose extensive Basquiat collection went on view last year at the Brant Foundation in New York City. News of the sale was first reported in art advisor Josh Baer’s newsletter, though the specific painting was identified by Bloomberg.

Sotheby’s is honored to announce that Mark Rothko’s Blue Over Red, created in the critical year of 1953, will appear as a highlight of their Contemporary Art Evening Auction in New York. In this episode of Expert Voices, Sotheby’s Chairman Lisa Dennison examines the inspiration behind Rothko’s masterpiece and explores his pioneering approach to abstraction. Executed in a richly saturated palette of orange, red and yellow, dramatically offset by a luminous blue band, Blue Over Red exemplifies the signature radiance of Rothko’s works.
