The NBA has officially announced the sale of the Sixers to a group headed by billionaire Joshua Harris. The new ownership group includes Philadelphia native Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

The NBA said its Board of Governors had “unanimously approved the sale” of the team. A news conference is scheduled for 11:30 Tuesday morning.

The new owners have named former Philadelphian Adam Aron CEO.

“My partners and I are thrilled to have become owners of the Sixers,” said Harris in the news release. “It’s an honor to be part of this storied franchise. We want to build on the team’s momentum and be world class and cutting edge in everything we do.”

The 46-year-old Harris, a Wharton grad, made his fortune as a leveraged buyout specialist. According to Forbes, he’s worth an estimated $1.5 Billion.

The deal is reportedly for $280 million.

(Washington Post) WASHINGTON — In a ceremony that blended worship and a call to action, tens of thousands gathered Sunday (Oct. 16) for the official dedication of a national memorial to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

“In this place, he will stand for all time, among monuments to those who fathered this nation and those who defended it; a black preacher with no official rank or title who somehow gave voice to our deepest dreams and our most lasting ideals,” President Obama said.

Obama spoke in the shadow of the 30-foot sculpture of King’s likeness called the “Stone of Hope,” which emerges from a “Mountain of Despair,” both images taken from King’s iconic 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech.

The throngs of people were smaller than the crowds anticipated for the memorial’s original dedication date on Aug. 28, the 48th anniversary of the March on Washington and King’s most famous speech.

Weeks after Hurricane Irene disrupted the original dedication festivities, those who made it to the rescheduled ceremony said the delay had not dampened their respect for King’s legacy as a religious and civil rights leader.

“Dr. King was a 20th-century prophet and so that’s really significant to see that we’ve got a prophet on the National Mall where presidents usually are,” said the Rev. Seretta C. McKnight of Hempstead, N.Y., who traveled with members of her youth leadership organization. “He gave his life, so that is the least that can be done to commemorate.”

Held during the traditional Sunday morning worship time, the ceremony featured choirs, gospel artists Mary Mary, and Aretha Franklin singing one of King’s favorite hymns, “Precious Lord.” But it also had political overtones as some speakers lent support to Obama’s re-election; the crowd occasionally broke into chants of “four more years!” for the nation’s first African-American president.

Beyonce says the “Love On Top” clip pays homage to her favorite all-male bands growing up.

I had an idea for the video based on some of my favorite male groups. I remember seeing videos from New Edition, the Jackson 5 and The Temptations, bands I love for their beautiful harmonies, and precise choreography and I always wanted to make a video and be part of a boy group myself. It was so much fun.

(Bloomberg) — Apple Inc. sold more than 4 million iPhone 4S devices in the first three days after it was introduced, setting a record as customers lined up at stores from Sydney to Las Vegas to be first with the new touch- screen handset.

That’s more than double the 1.7 million iPhones sold by Cupertino, California-based Apple last year, during the introduction of the previous model.

Demand for the new device extends Apple’s lead as the top maker of smartphones as it fends off rivals including Samsung Electronics Co. and HTC Corp. that rely on Google Inc.’s Android software. U.S. wireless partners Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc. and Sprint Nextel Corp. reported high activation rates for the new iPhone, which has new voice-recognition software, a speedier processor and higher-quality camera.

“Higher-than-expected sales may have been the result of availability at Verizon and Sprint in addition to AT&T, broader international distribution, positive reviews, timing of the iPhone 3GS hardware upgrade availability and possible Steve Jobs tribute-related demand,” said Mike Abramsky, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets, in a research note today. He had projected sales of about 3 million units for the debut weekend.

The iPhone 4S went on sale Oct. 14 in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the U.K., in Apple’s first hardware release since the Oct. 5 death of former Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs. The company also has debuted iCloud, for wirelessly synchronizing music, pictures and documents across Apple devices, and iOS 5 mobile software.

Customers lined up outside stores in cities including Frankfurt, Tokyo, Las Vegas and New York. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak was among the first to get a handset at the store in Los Gatos, California. With a two-year contract, the iPhone 4S costs $199, $299 or $399, depending on amount of memory.

The stock rose less than a percent to $425.32 at 10:44 a.m. New York time. Expectations for high sales helped push Apple’s shares up 3.3 percent to $422 in U.S. trading on Oct. 14. The shares have risen 31 percent this year before today.

Sales from this weekend won’t be included in Apple’s fourth-quarter results, due to be reported Oct. 18. In the period, profit jumped 62 percent to $6.98 billion on sales of $29.6 billion, according to the average estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.
