The 2013 Forbes Billionaires list now includes 1,426 names, with an aggregate net worth of $5.4 trillion, up from $4.6 trillion. Billionaire investor Warren Buffett says he’s still optimistic about local newspapers as long as they develop successful web strategies. In his annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, Buffett explained why he bought 28 daily newspapers over the past 18 months for $344 million.

On June 26 Forbes convened the first-ever Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy, a gathering of 161 billionaires and near-billionaires intent on solving the world’s most intractable problems. During a break in the action, twelve of the nation’s leading philanthropists sat for a group portrait by photographer Michael Prince in the Trustees Room at the New York Public Library. The net worth in the room: $126 billion. The historic photo folds out as the cover of the 30th annual Forbes 400 issue, the definitive ranking of America’s wealthiest people.
Warren Buffett celebrated his 82nd birthday Thursday by announcing an additional $3.1 billion in donations to the charities run by his three children.
