Thailand Billionaire founder of Red Bull dies at 89

BANGKOK (AP) — State media in Thailand say the self-made Thai billionaire who created the renowned Red Bull energy drink three decades ago has died. He was 89.

Thai state television broadcaster MCOT says that Chaleo Yoovidhya died of natural causes on Saturday. It cited an executive at the Thai Beverage Industry Association.

Chaleo founded T.C. Pharmaceuticals. In the 1970s, it formulated an energy drink prototype called Krathing Daeng, or Red Bull in English. It was popular among Thai truck drivers and laborers.

PayPal Launches ‘Paypal Here’ Credit Card Readers

Announced Thursday at an event in San Francisco, PayPal Here is set to go head-to-head against mobile payment pioneer Square for part of the small business pie.

Much like Square, PayPal Here will have a card reader that plugs into your mobile phone via the headset jack on your handset. While Square’s reader comes in the form of a white square device, PayPal’s will instead be a blue triangle. The encrypted reader will be available for free to small business owners and can be used to accept credit card payments.

“Consumers are changing how they shop and pay,” says eBay CEO Kevin Donahoe. “Retailers are looking for a technology company they can trust and eBay is that company.”

AUSTIN, Texas — Photo-sharing app Instagram has nearly doubled its total number of registered users since December, Instagram founder Kevin Systrom (pictured above) announced Sunday at the South by Southwest conference.

Instagram, which launched two years ago, now boasts 27 million registered users, up from 15 million in December of last year, according to Systrom. Foursquare, by comparison, claims just under 20 million users, and was founded in March of 2009.
