Eddie Murphy Pulls Out as Oscars Host
A day after Brett Ratner resigned as Academy Awards producer over his use of an anti-gay slur and other offensive comments, the comedian/actor he’d picked to host the show — Eddie Murphy — quits as well.
Brett Ratner is the director of new Hollywood film, Tower Heist starring Eddie Murphy.
Eddie Murphy has been one of Hollywood’s most bankable actors for years, but according to Forbes his recent box office failures have landed him in the No. 2 spot in their Most Overpaid Actors list.
Murphy struck box office gold with Dr. Doolittle and The Nutty Professor, both brought in $250 million worldwide. But two of his most recent films, Imagine That and Meet Dave bombed terribly. Leaving the actor in desperate need of a hit.
Drew Barrymore is also searching for a hit flick. According to Forbes the actress only brings 40 cents for every dollar she is paid, placing her at the top of the list.
Will Ferrell (No. 3), Reece Witherspoon (No. 4) and Denzel Washington round out the top five.
Eddie Murphy is preparing to return to the stage as a stand-up comedian, but he insists it will be a year before he has enough material for a full show.
Before he became an in-demand film star, Murphy was one of the world’s top comics and could fill huge venues, like New York’s Madison Square Garden – and now he admits he’s itching to get back out there.
The Shrek star says, “Within the last six months or so, I started getting an itch to do it again. I started writing stuff… I was like, ‘I could go and do 15, 20 minutes right now. Maybe in a couple of months I’ll start working out again.’
“But it’ll take a year before I’m ready to go on the road… It’s gonna take at least a year to get the rust off; 20 years of rust.” Source: WENN.com
