#DETROIT #OPERATION GRADUATION… www.JRLADetroit.com

Former U of M Fab Five member, NBA Star and now ESPN/ABC Basketball Analyst, Detroit native Jalen Rose gives back to the community by opening a charter school with his own money in the inner city of Detroit.  Detroit Public Schools recently announced it will be closing half of its public schools, creating classrooms with over 60 students per teacher in an already failing system.

Rose has recently been in the news for his dialogue back and forth with NBA Superstar and former Duke Blue Devil Grant Hill for his “Uncle Tom” comments in the FAB FIVE Documentary (executive produced by Jalen Rose).

Big ups to Jalen for giving back to his community that is in need of help.  Thats #GWOP

AT&T Inc. agreed to buy T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE) for about $39 billion in cash and stock to create America’s largest mobile-phone company, trumpingSprint Nextel Corp. (S)’s effort to acquire the business.

The deal would allow AT&T, now the second-largest U.S. wireless operator, to add about 34 million customers and surpass Verizon Wireless. The acquisition, the largest in the wireless industry since 2004, may face government scrutiny because it combines the second- and fourth-largest wireless providers, reducing consumer choice. Regulatory approval may take a year, Dallas-based AT&T said

“I’m not a businessman – I’m a Business, man.” –JayZ

spotted: Forbes

1. Focus on the most realistic chance to make the most money at all times.

Jay-Z has amassed a fortune of $450 million by living this philosophy, from dealing drugs as an adolescent to selling records, clothes, liquor and more as an adult.

2. Attach yourself to other successful brands.

One of Jay-Z’s best-known boasts is that he “made the Yankee cap more famous than a Yankee can.” Whether or not you agree with that statement, Jay-Z has certainly added to his victorious aura by associating himself with the Yankees, Michael Jordan, Warren Buffett and others.

3. Keep business and pleasure separate.

Jay-Z rarely speaks about his wife Beyonce and they’re far from being tabloid regulars like other celebrity couples.

“Gun’s I Bust em/ Problems with my Wife Don’t Discuss em/ Coupes & Lier Jets I Lust them”   -Biggie Smalls “Get Money (remix)”

4. Don’t give free advertising to other brands unless there’s a good reason.

In the late 1990s Jay-Z mentioned Iceberg clothing in a few of his songs and sales spiked. When he tried to parlay that into an endorsement deal, the company declined–so Jay-Z started his own, and called it Rocawear. Since then, he’s been paid to endorse GM, Hewlett-Packard, Budweiser and others, and the only free advertising via references in his songs is for brands like Maybach.

5. Never publicize anything less than a victory.

Jay-Z doesn’t talk much about his deals that fell apart or his products that flopped–his Armadale vodka and the Las Vegas location of his 40/40 Club. As a result, he’s able to maintain a victorious image.

Forbes

Forbes takes a look at the Top 5 wealthiest artists in the Hip Hop genre. Three of the people pictured above are on the list.

To narrow down the list Forbes went through an analyzing procedure. The following factors went into the decision making, “valuing current holdings, looking at past earnings, leafing through financial documents and talking to a bevy of analysts, attorneys, managers and other industry players to find the nitty-gritty details. We considered only performers, which is why hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons isn’t on this list.”

Well with that being said here is Forbes top 5 wealthiest hip-hop artists

1. Diddy ($475 million)

2. Jay-Z ($450 million)

3. Dr. Dre ($125 million)

4. 50 Cent ($100 million)

5. Birdman ($100 million)

For more head over to Forbes, for an in depth look.

Carlos Slim Helu, added $20.5 billion to his fortune, more than any other billionaire. The telecom mogul is now worth $74 billion and has pulled far ahead of his two closest rivals. Bill Gates, No. 2, and Warren Buffett, No. 3, both added a more modest $3 billion to their piles and are now worth $56 billion and $50 billion, respectively.

Bill Gates didn’t lose his title as the world’s richest man last year; he gave it away by putting billions into his charitable foundation, experts say.

Forbes will release its 2011 billionaires list on Wednesday (check back to GWOP for full list) and Gates, investor Warren Buffett and last year’s richest man, Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim, will almost certainly be in the top three. The trio have topped the list for the past five years.

But it would be no contest if Microsoft co-founder Gates had not already given away more than a third of his wealth to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which focuses on global health and development and U.S. education.

Experts say, Gates was currently worth about $49 billion, behind Slim, whose fortune he estimated at $60 billion. Buffett, also a philanthropist, is now worth some $47 billion.

But had Gates not given away any money, he would be worth $88 billion, experts say.
Gates and his wife Melinda have so far given $28 billion to their foundation, the largest in the United States.

Now thats #GWOP.  If we you had the billions like Bill Gates, what charitable organization or research would you invest your money into?  Cure for Brain Cancer? Stem Cell Research? Cure for HIV/AIDS?  Childhood Obesity?

Feel free to comment.
