Chicago-sun-times

Reports are emerging that the The Chicago Sun-Times has laid off its entire photo staff.

According to The Chicago Tribune, 20 full-time staffers in the photo department received layoff notices Thursday. In a statement shared with its chief competitor, the Sun-Times said it was looking to shift more resources to video and other multimedia elements:

The Sun-Times business is changing rapidly and our audiences are consistently seeking more video content with their news. We have made great progress in meeting this demand and are focused on bolstering our reporting capabilities with video and other multimedia elements. The Chicago Sun-Times continues to evolve with our digitally savvy customers, and as a result, we have had to restructure the way we manage multimedia, including photography, across the network.” Read More

284,000: Number of American college graduates working in minimum-wage jobs in 2012.

The Wall Street Journal this week reported on the troubling trend of college graduates getting stuck in low-skilled jobs, a problem that new research suggests may endure even after the economy improves.

According to the Labor Department, there were 284,000 graduates—those with at least a bachelor’s degree—working minimum-wage jobs in 2012, including 37,000 holders of advanced degrees. That’s down from a peak of 327,000 in 2010, but double the number in 2007 and up 70% from a decade earlier.

Economist Arthur Okun developed the original Misery Index in the 1960s. It combines unemployment and inflation.

Forbes look at misery is localized, and includes unemployment, as well as other things that aggravate people. The metrics include: violent crime, unemployment, foreclosures, taxes (income and property) and home prices. Hostess’ advisers will soon begin to shut down the company’s 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers, headquarted in Irving, TX. The vast majority of its 18,300 employees will be laid off, according to the company.

As part of the liquidation process, Hostess is also moving to sell off its iconic portfolio of treats. Such brands often find a second home after bankruptcy, often with companies specializing in intellectual property.

CNNMoney set out to find America’s Best Jobs this year, first and foremost they looked for professions that offer great growth opportunities. Another big factor: how well the job pays, since being able to make a good living is especially important now.

CNNMoney also incorporated data from compensation experts PayScale.com’s survey of more than 120,000 workers. Employees ranked their jobs on quality-of-life factors such as stress, flexibility, satisfaction and how they feel their job affects the world.
