United Health Foundation has released their annual report on America’s Health.

The most startling fact in the report was that in the last decade the annual improvement in America’s health has declined 69% compared to the 1990s.
In a mere two decades, obesity has risen 15+ points (from 11.6% to 27.5%) in the adult population and could approach 40+ percent by the end of the decade if the trend continues.
Both obesity and diabetes (type 2) are preventable and treatable through lifestyle changes. Five factors are key to avoid becoming a statistic: keep your weight within a normal range (with BMI of 25 or less); eat a healthy diet; refrain from (or quit) smoking; alcohol in moderation; and partake in regular physical exercise (determined to be at least 20 minutes of aerobic exercise three or more times per week).

Facebook released a wealth of data about 2011′s most shared content, both globally and for specific countries. Across the world, Osama Bin Laden’s death was the most popular status update topic, followed by the Green Bay Packers’ Super Bowl win and the Casey Anthony trial.

When compared with the top spiking tweets of the year, differences between Twitter and Facebook become clear. Twitter’s real-time focus led entertainment awards shows, natural disasters, and sports to dominate, while Facebook’s discussion capabilities led world news and celebrity deaths to trend there.

The official Facebook Page currently features a Memology 2011 app that displays popular cultural phenomena from several different countries. In the US and Canada, the acronym “lms” (like my status) became a prevalent way to request a visibility increase for one’s content. This indicates that users at least vaguely understand how the EdgeRank news feed sorting algorithm works. Meanwhile, “tbh” (to be honest) gained popularity as a method of expressing that one was speaking sincerely — context that can be difficult to determine purely from text.

The top 6 fastest growing news outlets were: 1. CNN, 2. Fox News, 3. NPR, 4. The Onion, 5. The New York Times, and 6. Al Jezeera, showing the diversity of opinions and interests of Facebook’s user base. Rihanna’s “We Found Love” was the most listened to song. Facebook’s inclusion of song listening data underscores how its new Open Graph listening applications could become a way to accurately track song popularity beyond sales.

Fred Hampton Jr. (the son of the late Illinois Black Panther Party chairman, Fred Hampton, Sr)

The son of late African American activist Fred Hampton, Fred Hampton, Jr., has lashed back at rap mogul Jay-Z for making a reference to his slain father on the new Watch the Throne album.

“I arrived the same day Fred Hampton died.”

The above line is said by Jay-Z on the song “Murder To Excellence” off Watch The Throne.  The line pays homage to the fallen leader of the Black Panther Party who was killed on December 4, 1969 when Chicago police and FBI agents stormed into his apartment and opened fire on a sleeping Fred Hampton.  Jay-Z was born on the same day, leading Jay to make the statement above on Watch The Throne, alluding to how he was given life on the same day it was taken from Hampton, as the line ends “real n***as just multiply.”

During a film screening of “The Black Power Mixtape: 1967-1975” and panel at University of Chicago on Saturday, Fred Hampton Jr. shared his feelings on the song lyric and Jay-Z.  Speaking to a crowd at the University’s International House, Hampton voiced his displeasure with the lyric, saying that Jay-Z has twisted that truth.  “Fred Hampton didn’t die,” Hampton Jr. said.  “He was assassinated.  Saying Fred Hampton died is like the school teacher telling students that Christopher Columbus discovered America.”  He later went on to refer to Jay-Z as Slave-Z, questioning his motives on the record.

Checkout the record yourself.  Is Jay Z paying homage or is Fred Hampton Jr. overreacting?  Whatever the case may be Jay & Kanye raised awareness about the topic of Fred Hampton Sr.

Brent Darby, who led River Rouge high school (Michigan) to Class B basketball titles in 1998 and ’99, died today in a Detroit hospital. He was 30 years young.

Darby had experienced problems from blood clots for more than a year, and they were the cause of his death.

Darby graduated from River Rouge in 1999 and played four seasons at Ohio State before graduating in 2003. He played professionally in Spain and Italy before returning to Michigan. His last season in Italy was 2009.

R.I.P. Brent Darby.  This is horrible news. Our prayers go out to the Darby family. #TheGoodDieYoung

Darby isn’t the 1st Michigan standout basketball player to pass this year.  The city of Detroit lost former NBA player Robert “Tractor” Traylor earlier this year to a heart attack in Puerto Rico.  Traylor was a former McDonald’s All American and University of Michigan star who passed on May 11,2011 while talking to his wife on the phone.

The Twilight movies are more than a cultural sensation, they’re a financial phenomenon. The latest, Breaking Dawn, has ranked No. 1 at the U.S. box office for the past three weekends and has already earned $588 million worldwide. The entire franchise has brought in $2.4 billion so far and there’s still one more movie set for release next year.

It’s been a lot of reward for relatively little outlay. The first two movies were produced for $37 million and $50 million, respectively. The current film is the most expensive to date with an estimated budget of $110 million. Part of the reason the budget has risen is that stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are getting paid more for playing Bella and her vampire boyfriend Edward, but they’re still not getting the $20 million paychecks that some big stars can command.
